The lesson is: take time to prepare a robust costs estimate and regularly update it or face Solicitor Act assessment.


The old fashioned approach by solicitors claiming it is impossible to predict estimates of costs is now unacceptable.  Neither can solicitors provide an early estimate which is then not updated for a considerable period.


So said Master Rowley who ordered detailed assessment of bills valued at £4.2m raised by City firm Dechert during the 2 years it retained former client Eurasion Natural Resources Corp (ENRC).


Master Rowley said it was clear that from the beginning of the retainer Decherts had provided estimates which were consistently below the costs being incurred.
